Renal Physiology Distal Convoluted Tubule

چکیده
The distal convoluted tubule is the nephron segment that lies immediately downstream of the macula densa. Although short in length, the distal convoluted tubule plays a critical role in sodium, potassium, and divalent cation homeostasis. Recent genetic and physiologic studies have greatly expanded our understanding of how the distal convoluted tubule regulates these processes at the molecular level. This article provides an update on the distal convoluted tubule, highlighting concepts and pathophysiology relevant to clinical

Cloning and localization of KCC4 in rabbit kidney: expression in distal convoluted tubule.
Cl-dependent K secretion is a feature of renal distal tubules and collecting ducts. Recent cloning and identification of K-Cl cotransporter proteins led us to search for additional novel KCC isoforms expressed in the renal distal nephron. A human expressed sequence tag (EST) with high homology to KCC1 was identified. The rabbit isoform was cloned by homology using degenerate primers and rapid a...
متن کاملSodium and potassium handling by the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron: the pivotal role of the distal and connecting tubule.
Sodium reabsorption and potassium secretion in the distal convoluted tubule and in the connecting tubule can maintain the homeostasis of the body, especially when dietary sodium intake is high and potassium intake is low. Under these conditions, a large proportion of the aldosterone-regulated sodium and potassium transport would occur in these nephron segments before the tubular fluid reaches t...
متن کاملRole of NHE isoforms in mediating bicarbonate reabsorption along the nephron.
This study assessed the functional role of Na(+)/H(+) exchanger (NHE) isoforms NHE3 and NHE2 in the proximal tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule of the rat kidney by comparing sensitivity of transport to inhibition by Hoe-694 (an agent known to inhibit NHE2 but not NHE3) and S-3226 (an agent with much higher affinity for NHE3 than NHE2). Rates of transport of fluid (J(v)) and HC...
متن کاملOsmotically induced changes in electrical resistance of distal tubules of rat kidney.
Changes in peritubular oncotic pressure do not alter the electrical resistance of distal convoluted tubules. Transverse specific electrical resistance decreases along the distal convoluted tubule in nondiuretic rats. This drop in resistance can be at least in part accounted for by the relative increae in osmolality of late distal fluid. Osmotic gradients influence the magnitude of intercellular...
متن کاملDivalent cation transport by the distal nephron: insights from Bartter's and Gitelman's syndromes.
Elucidation of the gene defects responsible for many disorders of renal fluid and electrolyte homeostasis has provided new insights into normal and abnormal physiology. Identifying the causes of Gitelman's and Bartter's syndromes has greatly enhanced our understanding of ion transport by thick ascending limb and distal convoluted tubule cells. Despite this information, several phenotypic featur...
